Where are Morukuru Family villas and hotels located in South Africa?

Morukuru Family offers luxury exclusive-use villas and boutique hotels in three malaria-free South African destinations: Madikwe Game Reserve (private Big Five safari houses), Sandton in Johannesburg (AtholPlace Hotel & Villa), and De Hoop Nature Reserve (Morukuru Beach Lodge and Morukuru Ocean House).

Morukuru Family Madikwe is accessible via a 1-hour shuttle or private charter flight from Johannesburg to Madikwe East Airstrip, followed by a 45-minute game drive transfer. Alternatively, it is approximately a 4-hour self-drive or private road transfer from Johannesburg. 

AtholPlace Hotel & Villa in Sandton is approximately 35 minutes by car from OR Tambo International Airport or 15 minutes via the Gautrain to Sandton Station.

Morukuru Family De Hoop is about a 1-hour private charter flight from Cape Town or a scenic 3.5-hour self-drive or private road transfer. Guests arriving by air are met for a 25-minute transfer to the lodge.

Yes. Self-driving to Madikwe Game Reserve is safe and straightforward. Roads are mostly tarred until the reserve gate, with gravel roads inside the reserve. Gate hours are 06:00–18:00. A SUV with higher ground clearance is recommended. Our guide will meet you at the gate, to escort you to the house.

Yes. Self-driving to De Hoop Nature Reserve is safe. Access includes approximately 35 km of gravel road from Bredasdorp or Swellendam. Gate hours are 07:00–18:00 (19:00 on Fridays).

A 4WD vehicle is not required. However, a SUV is recommended for comfort due to gravel road sections when accessing Madikwe Game Reserve and De Hoop Nature Reserve.

Check-in is from 14:00 onwards and check-out is at 11:00 latest. Due to the exclusive-use concept at most properties, early check-in or late check-out is only possible when booking an additional night. At Morukuru Beach Lodge and at AtholPlace Hotel we can be a offer a bit more flexibility.

Yes. All Morukuru Family villas and lodges are located in malaria-free areas of South Africa. Madikwe Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s leading malaria-free Big Five safari destinations.
Yes. Morukuru Family Madikwe offers private Big Five safari experiences within Madikwe Game Reserve. Guests may see lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, as well as cheetah and African wild dog.
At Morukuru Family Madikwe and De Hoop, stays include all meals, soft drinks, house wines, local spirits and included activities. AtholPlace Hotel includes breakfast and limited minibar drinks. AtholPlace Villa includes breakfast, limited drinks, airport transfers and offers an optional private chef at additional cost.
Yes. De Hoop Nature Reserve is one of the world’s top land-based whale watching destinations. Southern right whales migrate to the area between July and November, with sightings often possible directly from the lodge.
Yes. Children of all ages are welcome at all Morukuru Family properties. The exclusive-use safari concept in Madikwe allows families to enjoy private game drives without typical age restrictions. Infants aged 0–2 stay complimentary.
In Madikwe, activities include private Big Five game drives, bush walks, bush meals, fishing and Sleep-Out experiences. In De Hoop, included activities include fynbos walks, marine walks, mountain biking, sandboarding, snorkelling, swimming in rock pools and nature drives.
The Morukuru Freedom Concept allows guests staying in exclusive-use villas to customize safari times, meals and activities without fixed schedules. Each stay is fully tailored by a private guide and chef according to guest preferences.
The best time for a safari in Madikwe Game Reserve is during the dry season from April to October. De Hoop Nature Reserve is ideal for whale watching from July to November and for beach holidays from November to March.
Yes. Morukuru Family Madikwe and De Hoop offer LTE/3G Wi-Fi with limited bandwidth due to their remote locations. AtholPlace Hotel & Villa in Sandton offers fibre internet.
A minimum 4-night stay applies at Morukuru Family Madikwe and De Hoop during peak season (Christmas and New Year). No minimum stay applies during the rest of the year.

Yes. Morukuru Family offers seasonal Stay/Pay promotions, an Early Bird offer, a Honeymoon offer, and the Morukuru Family Journey where guests booking a minimum of 7 combined nights at Madikwe and De Hoop receive 2 complimentary nights at AtholPlace Hotel & Villa.

Through the Morukuru Goodwill Foundation, guests can join conservation-focused experiences such as Safaris with a Purpose in Madikwe Game Reserve and Coastal Conservation with a Purpose in De Hoop Nature Reserve, including access to the Two Oceans Aquarium Turtle Conservation Centre in Cape Town.
