On 22 October 2025, Morukuru Family celebrates two decades of freedom, adventure, and wild possibility – a journey that began with the idea of a bush home and flourished into the most personal kind of luxury travel there is: space to live freely, connect deeply, and leave a lighter mark on this remarkable land.
“We wanted a home where our own family could breathe and be part of the bush’s rhythm,” says founder Anka Zeeman. “But very quickly, we realised what we’d created was something other families were craving too – a place to make memories, together and undisturbed.”

Pioneers of exclusive-use accommodation
Morukuru Family didn’t set out to follow the safari crowd. From the day Morukuru Owner’s House and Morukuru River House opened their doors, we upended the script with dedicated guides, chefs, and hosts just for your group, as well as no set timetables or sharing of space with strangers. The Morukuru Freedom Concept was born, making us true pioneers of exclusive-use luxury in South Africa.
“‘Exclusive-use’ wasn’t even a term in the safari world when we opened. We simply wanted our house to feel like yours – laughing late into the night, kids underfoot, bush dinners whenever the mood struck. That feeling caught on fast,” explains Anka. “We prefer to build in a very compact way – with everything under one roof loved ones share more time together. Having a central living room and dining room where everyone gathers creates a homely feel, and parents feel more at ease when their children are in a room close by.”

Growing the family (and our light footprint)
What began on the banks of the Marico River – and expanded to include five-bedroom Morukuru Farm House, which welcomed bigger clans and milestone gatherings – soon reached beyond Madikwe Game Reserve. In 2014, our coastal soul, Morukuru Ocean House, opened in De Hoop Nature Reserve, embracing off-grid living and the wild southern sea. Morukuru Beach Lodge and Bites Beach Café soon followed, bringing new ways for all ages to fall in love with the fynbos and the tides.

In 2015, AtholPlace Hotel & Villa in the City of Gold was added to the Morukuru Family collection of properties, combining sanctuary and that signature Morukuru Family warmth in Johannesburg – and that perfect halfway stop between safari and coast.

Resilience written in every chapter
Of course, every good story weaves in challenge. Over 20 years, Morukuru Family has faced its fair share: global shocks, like Covid-19, tested private travel; the mighty Marico River flooded, filling our houses with water. Each time, our team rallied with sleeves rolled and hearts steady – renewing and looking ahead.
“We’ve learned from the bush itself. Rather than going back to how things were, true resilience is about reinvention and finding beauty in change,” says founder Ed Zeeman.
Meaningful impact; lasting legacy
At the core of our journey runs a deeper purpose. The Morukuru Goodwill Foundation, launched in 2007, has channelled guest passion and our own commitment into conservation and community. We strive to create a legacy that extends past treasured holidays, from rhino protection and predator research in Madikwe Game Reserve and partnering with the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Conservation Centre and Landmark Foundation in De Hoop Nature Reserve to beach clean-ups and local school support.
Sustainability is part of our DNA, with all houses in Madikwe Game Reserve and De Hoop Nature Reserve now fully off-grid, and new ways for guests to be part of conservation unfolding each season.
“Seeing children learn all about the importance of ecosystems, or guests witnessing a rhino notching, reminds us what it’s all about,” says Anka. “Our family has grown to include every child, parent, and grandparent who found connection and purpose here.”
