If you look at our calendar (diaries and digital planners too), Monday 25 May is marked with a bright red circle. Why? Well, its Africa Day! This is a special day for everyone who holds the continent close to their hearts and is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity ( OAU) on 25 May 1963. Africa has an irresistible pull; a special type of gravity which draws us in - more like a natural phenomenon which we can’t escape. We think of it as our life force - our ability to live or exist. When out on safari and we stop to take in the panorama, we view the landscape and believe we have witnessed the hand of God. We watch the slow saunter of a lioness and forget to breathe. We marvel at the tripod of a giraffe bent to drink at a waterhole. Our breath is taken away by our pack of wild dogs and their cubs. Our hearts beat a little faster at the sight of a leopard in a tree with a kill. We feel a rush of adrenaline when a herd of buffalo pounds across the horizon. And our heartstrings are pulled by the pit-a-pat of baby warthogs trailing behind their mama.

There is no place quite like Africa - the untamed bush, the abundant wildlife, the people - it captivates with its sights, scents, sounds, and tastes. A magical place like no other. Words are hard to find, to do justice to our home. Beryl Markam (English-born Kenyan aviator, adventurer and author 1902-1986) wrote this paragraph Africa is mystic; it is wild; it is a sweltering inferno; it is a photographer’s paradise, an escapist’s Utopia. It is what you will, and it withstands all interpretations. It is the last vestige of a dead world or the cradle of a shiny new one. To a lot of people, as to myself, it is just home. We couldn’t say it any better!It is our home.

Africa is a wild, beautiful, raw, dynamic place that you have to see and experience for yourself. There is an African proverb which says If you want to go fast, go alone.
