When we started 2025, a refurbishment was not part of the plan. Then the Molatedi Dam overflowed, the Marico River rose and nature pressed pause on two of our most cherished river houses at Morukuru Family Madikwe.
When the flood came, the waterline reached the top of the doorway. Exteriors were mercifully spared, but inside, the river had its say. Our team moved fast, salvaging what they could (cherished artworks, a few of our favourite wines), and then stood quietly for a moment, taking it in. It was a moment that tugged at the heartstrings. But if the bush has taught us anything, it’s resilience. So, we took a deep breath and turned challenge into possibility. On 1 September 2025, Morukuru Owner’s House and Morukuru River House reopened: refreshed and ready to welcome you home to the river.
Resting beneath ancient Tamboti trees (did you know that ‘Morukuru’ is the Tswana word for Tamboti?), our two exclusive-use river houses have long been sanctuaries for families and friends who love the Morukuru Freedom Concept: total privacy and days that unfold exactly as you wish.
That spirit remains, now wrapped in inspired new interiors by designer Amy Kidger of Hinterland Studio. Amy drew from the bush itself (ochres and rusts, deep greens, and river blues), layering tactile textures, woven details, and a curated series of striking photographic artworks was added as well. The result is quietly bold: a calm, characterful backdrop to the theatre of safari life.

The portraits you’ll see throughout the river houses are by Leana Clunies-Ross, commissioned by owners Ed & Anka Zeeman, to honour the spirit and power of African womanhood. We’ve curated a selection for both houses (each piece chosen for its presence and poetry).
We’ve also added a brand-new fitness room, shared between both houses and conveniently located at the curio shop, so you can greet the dawn with a flood of endorphins before greeting the giraffes (and enjoying yet another flow of endorphins).
And because some adventures call for a crowd, Morukuru Owner’s House and Morukuru River House remain an easy stroll apart, bookable together for larger gatherings.

A quick reacquaintance with the houses
Morukuru Owner’s House is our intimate two-bedroom haven on the river, perfect for couples or a small family who prefer quiet corners and the feeling of a private residence crafted just for them.

Morukuru River House, moments away, welcomes up to six adults and four children across three generous suites and a dedicated kid’s room, with plenty of space for laughter, games, and lazy afternoons by the pool.

For bigger gatherings, Morukuru Farm House (our five-bedroom private homestead with expansive lawns) was thankfully unaffected by the floods and has been open all year, as incredible as ever for multigenerational stays.
All three houses run off-grid on solar power. It’s part of our promise to keep our footprint light while keeping your comfort front and centre.
Additionally, each property comes with its own private team (guide and tracker, chef, host, butler, housekeeping, and babysitting on request), so all you need to do is arrive and exhale.

What’s new (and what you’ll love)
You’ll feel the refresh the moment you step inside. Look forward to rooms that invite you to linger, living spaces that open to the river, and subtle enhancements to outdoor decks for stargazing dinners and sun-dappled siestas.

Your days, your way
The Morukuru Family experience is as effortless as ever, whether you’re a first-time guest or already part of the family. Wake up when you like. Sip coffee while the river rushes past. Head out on a private game drive in a malaria-free Big Five reserve or choose a bush walk to read the “morning newspaper” of tracks in the sand. Lunch may drift into a nap, or a splash in your private infinity pool. Evenings are for firelit boma feasts, stories, and stars. Children are joyfully included in everything (from drumming and fishing to baking stokbrood over the coals)…because memories are best made together.

Make your safari matter: Safaris with a Purpose
Looking to weave conservation into your holiday? Our Safaris with a Purpose package invites families and close-knit groups (staying four nights or more at Morukuru Family Madikwe) to step behind the scenes of real conservation work in Madikwe Game Reserve. Join a rhino notching or big-cat veterinary procedure, visit the local school in Molatedi Village, and enjoy a private talk with one of the reserve’s researchers. It’s hands-on, heartfelt, and a powerful way to connect your safari to the work of the Morukuru Goodwill Foundation.
