Morukuru Owner’s House & Morukuru River House Reopening in September 2025 with Inspired New Interiors

At Morukuru Family, we believe that every experience – joyful or challenging – can create something beautiful. In February, our hearts were tested when unexpected flooding from three months of extreme rainfall caused the overflow of the Molatedi Dam. This in turn caused the Marico River to rise by as much as 10 meters in only 12 hours, impacting the interiors of two of our most cherished exclusive-use properties in Madikwe Game Reserve: Morukuru Owner’s House and Morukuru River House. Fortunately, Morukuru Farm House was not affected by the flooding and has remained open. While the event brought sadness for our team, it also sparked a moment of reflection and an opportunity to reimagine. We’re excited to announce that both properties are planned for reopening on 1 September 2025, with entirely refreshed interiors.

A return to the river, reimagined

Resting on the banks of the Marico River and shaded by ancient Tamboti trees (Morukuru is the Tswana word for the Tamboti), Morukuru Owner’s House and River House have long been sanctuaries for families and friends seeking intimate, tailor-made safari experiences. As part of our Morukuru Freedom Concept, these homes offer the space to reconnect, the privacy to unwind, and the freedom to explore at your own pace. Now they’re even more extraordinary! To lead the transformation, we’ve partnered with Amy Kidger of Hinterland Studio, a designer known for her ability to mix contemporary African aesthetics with warmth, texture, and soul. Amy’s vision for the refurbishment was inspired by the natural beauty of Madikwe Game Reserve and by artwork selected by our owners – striking portraits of women adorned in bold, traditional headscarves, symbolic of strength, culture, and grace.

Design that tells a story

Amy’s design language for both houses is rooted in the colours of the bushveld: earthy ochres, vibrant rusts, deep greens, and the occasional pop of yellow or blue, reminiscent of a bird’s flash of feathers or the golden light at dusk. These hues will be layered with textured wallpapers, woven elements, polished and patinated metals, and natural finishes that echo the landscape. The goal was to create interiors that feel alive, uplifting, and unmistakably ‘home’. A place where guests can wake up to the sound of the river, sip coffee by the fireplace, and gather for candlelit dinners under the stars, always wrapped in comfort and surrounded by beauty. Guests can also look forward to the addition of a brand-new fitness room, when staying at Morukuru Owner's House and Morukuru River House. This renovation is a celebration of resilience, creativity, and our unwavering commitment to offering memorable stays in one of South Africa’s most remarkable safari destinations. Whether you’re returning as a longtime Morukuru guest or planning your first visit, we can’t wait to welcome you into these revitalised spaces. Bookings are now open! We encourage early enquiries, as our homes tend to fill quickly, especially for multigenerational family getaways. We look forward to sharing this exciting new chapter with you.
