Small space. Little effort. Big impact…this Mandela Day (and every day)!

Travel industry pundits are calling 2021 The Year of Meaningful Travel. We know our guests visit us for plenty of reasons including our exclusive-use properties, outstanding scenery, gourmet food, nature and wildlife. We also know that many of our guests embrace their holiday as an opportunity for meaningful connection, introspection and growth.   Morukuru Family is excited to announce that we are now an official supporter of Pack for a Purpose! This international initiative makes it easy for our guests to make their trips even more meaningful. Our own Morukuru Goodwill Foundation (MGWF) has been committed to conservation, educational and social upliftment projects for years and Pack for a Purpose supports our MGWF vision.     Mandela Day is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela and the idea is to give back and make a contribution to global humanitarianism. We choose to celebrate each year on 18 July which is Mandela's birthday but we also choose to make a difference every day. Every day is Mandela Day at Morukuru Family!   The concept behind Pack for a Purpose is very simple; use a small amount of space in your luggage to pack supplies needed for community projects near our Morukuru Family locations.   So, if you are heading for Morukuru Family De Hoop you can consider Ouplaas EK Primary School which s a rural primary school located approximately 8km from the main gate of the De Hoop Nature Reserve. Morukuru Family De Hoop coordinates school projects to educate and improve the facilities for the children. Their wish list includes general school supplies, educational toys and sports equipment. We also support Elim Home which cares for the most severely intellectually and physically disabled children and young adults from disadvantaged communities. Their needs include art supplies and books. Beverly Doveton and her dedicated team operate a number of different community projects from the Nuwerus Nasorg Centre which is in the quaint village of Napier. Like most goodwill projects they have many needs including bed linen, personal care products and children’s clothing and shoes.   Morukuru Family Madikwe assists Molatedi Primary School, which is 10km from the Madikwe Game Reserve. The school has 152 learners and is staffed by nine teachers. Morukuru Family Madikwe assists, when possible, with anything that the school might need, and also gives guests the opportunity to visit the school. Daily essentials needed are school supplies like coloured pencils, ruled paper and chalk, and age-appropriate books and activities like puzzles and games. In addition, Molatedi Village is home to Mfoloe Learning Centre; a community creche focused on early learning. Operated by four teachers, this school is an essential support structure in the community and they are always looking for supplies to keep the kids active and engaged. Some of their priorities are educational games and toys - and sporting equipment to get little people active outdoors.   AtholPlace House and Villa in Johannesburg has chosen two welfare projects to support. The Village Safe Haven and Hearts of Hope are both charitable organisations that rely on fundraising and donations to continue their essential work. The Village Safe Haven is a children’s home caring for 36 vulnerable youngsters, and the work of Hearts of Hope concentrates on reuniting displaced children with biological families or advocating for adoption and placement in loving and caring homes where they can be given an opportunity for a lifetime of love, care, and belonging. As with any family, daily needs are never-ending. Both dedicated teams of carers are always looking to supplement their stock cupboards with household cleaning supplies, personal care products, school stationery and age-appropriate kids games and activities.   Thank you to all our guests who have supported our Morukuru Goodwill Foundation (MGWF) in the past, your generosity has had a big impact on our community projects. We invite all future guests to think about Pack for a Purpose to make your travels even more meaningful.
